Sections 2024

La Haine, de Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995

Aside from its international competitions, FIFF offers each year six or seven sections which celebrate cinema from all around the world. But there is much more to the Festival than films! FIFF also offers the public a great choice of side events, including Q&As, panel discussions, exhibitions, as well as special receptions and parties.

GENRE CINEMA (I): Hip-hop

Presentation

It is hard to believe but Hip-hop celebrated its 50th birthday on 11 August 2023. It was during the scorching summer of 1973 that this cultural phenomenon was (officially) born thanks to a wild party in the Bronx organised by the legendary DJ Kool Herc. Rap music – an integral part of Hip-hop culture – came to wider attention in the mid-1980s. A decade on, its popularity had grown exponentially. Hip-
hop culture also found its way onto the big screen and, as the FIFF programme shows, continues to inspire filmmakers of all stripes who keep the flow going.

GENRE CINEMA (II) : Audience choice

Presentation

For the fourth year running, the FIFF has invited the public to curate part of the Festival programme. This year, the public voted for their favourite five Hip-hop films from a shortlist of 50. Of the 865 votes, 4.59 % went to Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai; 4.62 % to Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing; 5.43 % to Brian De Palma’s Scarface; 5.55 % to Curtis Hanson’s 8 Mile: and 7.86 % for Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine. The audience’s choices perfectly complement this year’s Genre Cinema (I): Hip-hop line-up. Thank you to the world’s largest selection committee for your discerning eye!

DIASPORA: GOLSHIFTEH FARAHANI AND IRAN

Presentation

The death of Mahsa Amini on 16 September 2022 sparked a wave of protests across Iran. However, other devastating events like the war in Ukraine and conflict in the Middle East are drawing attention and support away from this resistance movement. The Festival wanted to use the modest means at its disposal to put Iran back in the spotlight. We therefore invited one of most powerful voices in the Iranian diaspora, actress Golshifteh Farahani, to curate this year’s Diaspora section. According to the activist, who has been in exile since 2008, she has chosen films that are “extraordinary and insane”

NEW TERRITORY: NORTH MACEDONIA

Presentation

North Macedonia is a melting pot of cultural influences, ethnicities and religions. The films in the New Territory section take an uncompromising look at a country that has suffered occupation and war, leaving it with a fragmented and fractured identity marked by conservatism and traditionalism, and struggling to reconcile with and move on from its past. The films also showcase the cheerful, quick-witted and fun-loving nature of its people, and the country’s extremely sensitive and intelligent approach to filmmaking. These films embody the “honey and blood” myth of a bal-kan country.

SUR LA CARTE DE MICHEL GONDRY

Presentation

Michel Gondry’s first foray into filmmaking was in 1988 when he produced a music video for his band Oui Oui. Before long, his directing talents were sought out by other musicians like Björk, the Rolling Stones, Daft Punk and Radiohead. He moved into feature films, picking up an Oscar for his second release Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He is currently working in Los Angeles on a musical produced and written by Pharrell Williams. He is also the curator of FIFF’s 2024 Sur La Carte de section. His choices are full of wit and wild-eyed
wonder, just like the man himself.
