The end of the 19th century. In a family mansion with an overwhelmingly red interior, Agnes is fighting an illness, while keeping an intimate diary. Her two sisters, Karin and Maria, as well as the servant, Anna, watch over her at her bedside. In turns, these women reveal more about themselves... The director of photography Sven Nykvist won his first Oscar for Best Cinematography.
