After having served a third of their sentence, five Kurdish prisoners are granted parole. But freedom isn't all it's cracked up to be. This masterpiece, which won the Palme d’or in 1982, was banned in Turkey for 15 years and was written and remotely directed by Güney while he was in prison, thanks to the help of his assistant Serif Gören. After escaping from prison, Güney completed the editing of the film in France.
