On the eve of the Angolan war of independence, Domingos Xavier, a revolutionary activist, is caught by the Portuguese secret police and thrown into Sambizanga prison. His wife Maria sets out to find him. This political drama, which won at Carthage and Berlin, documents the anti-colonial struggle of a country on the brink of emancipation.
