This ballad was the first of Imamura’s Palmes d’or (followed by The Eel, 1997). It follows a woman in the 1860s who, having reached the age of 70, goes to die on the summit of Mount Narayama in accordance with the tradition of the Shinshu Mountains. This moving masterpiece is the second adaptation of the Shichirô Fukazawa short story, after the film of the same name by Keisuke Kinoshita from 1958.
