Surely everyone knows the plotline of one of the most iconic films ever made. Hitchcock, Kubrick and Cassavetes were originally linked to the project. Finally, it was the novel’s author, William Peter Blatty, who suggested a young filmmaker for the job: William Friedkin, who had recently won a Best Director Oscar for The French Connection. Blatty would go on to win the 1974 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
