Tough and uncompromising, The Battle of Algiers is a masterpiece by Gillo Pontecorvo. Filmed using mostly amateur actors, apart from Jean Martin as the French colonel, the film portrays the battle for the control of the kasbah. Despite receiving the Golden Lion at Venice, the Critics’ Prize at Cannes and three Oscar nominations, the film was only released in France in 1971, amid considerable controversy. A timeless, searing indictment.
