Cinema can still sometimes provoke unexpected sensations, even without the use of 3D or other special effects. It’s rare, but the miracle has been pulled off by Makala, our opening film. Filmmaker Emmanuel Gras has managed to transform the odyssey of a young Congolese man, a coal seller, into a sensory journey that has haunted us since its first screening at Cannes, where it won the 2017 Critics’ Week Grand Prize.
