The inspiration behind the sixth and final film in the Gendarme series was the nascent feminisation of this almost exclusively male profession. Made one year prior to the death of Louis de Funès, its tried and tested formula once again proved to be box office dynamite (4.2 million tickets sold). The new women recruits defy the patronising job title gendarmette and outperform their crusty male colleagues.
