In this uncompromising study of a conservative and patriarchal society which won awards in Berlin in 2019 and Sofia in 2020, the titular Petrunya breaks with conventions by participating in a ceremony that is traditionally an all-male preserve. Through Mitevska’s sensitive and understated storytelling, the film delivers a powerful message.
