This debut feature by Maria João Ganga is one of the first films shot in Angola after the 25-year-long civil war ended, and the first by an Angolan woman. It tells the story of N’dala, an orphan who is part of a group of children fleeing the war. He breaks away from the nun accompanying them and embarks on his own journey. As she searches for him, the boy soon finds himself in the capital's underworld.
Primeiro filme da sua autoria, Na Cidade Vazia é também um dos primeiros filmes realizados em Angola após 25 anos de guerra civil, e o primeiro filme realizado por uma mulher angolana. Centra-se em N'dala, de 11 anos, que, após a morte dos seus pais, escapa de um grupo de crianças que fogem da guerra. Procurado por uma das freiras que cuidam das crianças, o rapaz explora Luanda até aos seus lugares mais sombrios.
