| Synopsis | In her first film, Hanna Schygulla, Rainer Werner
Fassbinder's regular lead actress (Lili Marleen, The
Marriage of Maria Braun) portrays her colleague
Alicia Bustamante, a Cuban theater / film actress
seen in Death of a Bureaucrat by Thomas Gutierrez
Alea. She absolutely wanted to make this film on
Alicia, whom she admires not only as an artist but
also as a woman. |

| Comment | Hanna Schygulla's film begins like a home movie but soon
gains momentum, leaves Paris, uses excerpts from Cuban
films, and lands in Havana. It is not guided by any preconceived
plan, only by the mood of the German actress-director.
And indeed, the Cuban star illuminates the screen as
she dances, sings, recites poetry and Bertolt Brecht with
passion, knowledge and humor, stirring up memories in
Paris or La Havana. Many viewers of this film, which is almost
entirely in Spanish, will be surprised to see how easily
Hanna Schygulla fits in with the language of Garcia
Marquez and the culture of the great Caribbean island.
And everyone will share her tender friendship with Alicia
Bustamante. |
